An empty swimming pool had become a hole in the middle of the garden. Instead of filling it in, we turned the shell into a sunken lounge with built in seating and a fire pit at its heart.

Starting point

Out of use for years, the pool was holding rainwater and debris, and took up the best part of the garden. The owners wanted to keep the space as a feature rather than lose it.

What we did

We cleared out the shell and used its depth to create a sunken seating area. Built in benches were formed around the sides, with a rendered fire pit in the centre and steps leading down from the lawn.

  • Clearing and preparing the old pool shell
  • Built in rendered benches around a sunken floor
  • A central fire pit as the focal point
  • A resin bound surround linking the lounge to the lawn

Finished result

Sitting below lawn level, the lounge feels sheltered and private, and the fire pit makes it a place to use well into the evening. A pale resin surround frames the space and ties it into the rest of the garden.
